Right now I am reading The Bad Guys Won, a book about the 1986 New York Mets. The Mets were the absolute worst team in baseball in the 70s, but were slowly getting better and better, until 1986, when they were considered the favorites to win the world series. The team was consisted of drug users, camera lovers and gang members, making them the most hated team in baseball by a lot. But if you're good, you dont need to be liked.
I think it was interesting what kind of people the Mets were made up of, like outfielder Kevin Mitchell, who didn't know that the statue of liberty was in New York until his rookie year in the MLB. Kevin Mitchell often threatened to kill players when he was in the minors, but matured when he aged. Basically The Bad Guys Won is about the rowdiest, hated and most obnoxious team maybe in baseball history, and one of the best.

That sounds like a funny, crazy and well written book. I don't like sports book that much but this sound really COOL!
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds pretty good. I mite try this one out.
ReplyDeleteEverybody hates the Mets, right?
ReplyDeleteBaseball is such an interesting sport. The players need to be all-around athletes. They can be quiet, thoughtful guys and crazy show-offs.
There are so many great books about baseball - last year one of my students was reading the a book about Joe Torre and the Yankees - and there are fantastic biographies about so many teams and players - this is a rich genre - even if you HAVE to read about the Mets.
